ShoggothOx is a high-performance, interactive audio visualizer for the browser. It is built in Rust, compiled to WebAssembly (WASM), and rendered with WebGPU or WebGL when available, with a Canvas 2D fallback.
ShoggothOx is developed and operated by NuSentry LLC.
In the mid-1990s, an audio visualizer called Cthugha (created by Kevin "Zaph" Burfitt) became known among PC audio and demoscene enthusiasts. It used feedback loops, cellular automata-style decay tables, and color palette cycling to create fluid, organic, fire-like visual patterns in sync with PC sound card inputs.
ShoggothOx is a modern reimagining of this design. It uses similar mathematical principles—including 2D cellular automata decay grids and custom translate mapping tables—to reproduce the hypnotic, fluid feedback loops of classic 90s visualizers, while utilizing modern GPU shaders for smooth, fast rendering.
